I have a friend who knows my triggers when it comes to earworms and glefully pulls them whenever he gets a chance. One of his favorites is the opening of Eminence Front, by The Who.
I love The Who. Love them. But Pete Townsend, for all his moments of transcendant brilliance, for all the times he has been able to articulate something that was only unfocused emotion or blind anger for me, can occaisionally annoy the living crap out of me. I guess that’s love.
The opening salvo of Eminence Front is perfectly designed to be an earworm. In reality, on the recorded version, the repetitive pattern eventually moves on into an actual song lasting five minutes and thirty nine seconds. The earworm version never gets past the first measure or two and usually lasts up to seven hours.
This last bout has gone on for a couple of days.
Love ya, Pete, but fuck you.
