I am very fond of this movie. Mostly because it is just a really sweet movie, it was directed by my friend, and because of the room it put me in for an hour.

I was working at Second City at the time, and they were filming at Twin Anchors, an amazing barbecue restaurant a couple of blocks away. I was early, so I walked by the set. Holly Wortell saw me, and I asked her to deliver a message to Bonnie Hunt. Just to say hi. Hadn’t seen her in years.

The next thing I know, I am sitting behind Bonnie on the set, in Minnie Driver’s chair. And Minnie is just plain lovely, delightful and insanely talented.

Then Bonnie introduced me to a deity, Carroll O’Connor, and I got to do my favorite thing in the world. I got to tell someone whose work I profoundly admire exactly what I think of them. And I don’t think I even spluttered that much.

I watched a few takes, and Bonnie introduced me to her cinematographer. I was still in the throws of shaking hands with Carroll O’Connor, and so it didn’t quite dawn on me until later that Bonnie had introduced me to Lazlo Kovacs. This guy was cinematographer on “Easy Rider”, “The Last Waltz”, “Ghostbusters”…”Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” for fuck’s sake!

So yeah, I always watch it when it’s on. And when that scene comes up (the guy with the hair transplant) I check out of the movie for a second, remember that room, and just marvel that I was there.
